lettuce snack

Post by bluefinch » Fri Mar 16, 2007 6:26 pm

This afternoon I gave my shafttails a piece of leaf lettuce as a special treat. They loved it! The hen was funny to watch, she would take a piece of lettuce up to a perch and hold it down with her foot so she could tear a piece of it off. Some times she would pull a little to hard and the leaf would go flying across the cage! She would then go bouncing after it. The male also did the same thing using his foot to hold the leaf in place although he chose to stay on the ground to eat.

 That is so funny! How cute! I usually attach a spinach leaf to the side of the cage with a clothes pin. They will grab onto the leaf with their beak and yank on it repeatedly until they manage to tear off a chunk. Its like they are playing tug of war. (the leaf usually loses)
