Freeze dried mealworms

Post by JohnBoy » Wed Mar 31, 2010 12:02 pm

I bought a large container of freeze-dried mealworms and none of my birds will eat them. I left them for 2 days and they went untouched. I guess I'll just have to powder them and mix with the eggfood.

Mine wouldn't touch them either. That's why I buy live mealies and put the portion I serve the next morning in the freezer overnight. That way they are dead but still fresh.

I serve freeze dried bloodworms too lately and they don't really go for them either. Maybe they eat a few because they are mixed in with the mealies. Only my button quail really eat freeze dried worms, but they like everything that looks and tastes remotely like an insect. When I had the sample bag of freeze dried mealworms once the quail were the only ones eating them.
Walk-in aviary with Waxbills (6 Cordon Bleu, 3 Orange Cheek, 3 Black-rumped, 1 Lavender, ), 1 European Goldfinch, 4 Gouldians, 2 Spice Finches, 6 Owl Finches, 4 Budgies and 2 male Button Quail.
I also have 2 parrotlets, 3 dogs, 1 snake and 3 freshwater fishtanks.

My birds didn't like the freeze dried mealworms, but scarf up the freeze dried bloodworms, daphnia, krill, spriulina and plankton! One female Gould will run back and forth from the 'plate' to the cage door while I'm getting it ready. She acts almost like a dog. I use the Can 'O Worms mini mealies, also.

Why freeze the mealies? Why not just feed them live?

The reason why a lot of us have been freezing them first, is to avoid escapees. My shaftails will eat some and fling the leftovers. The rest of the family did not see the humour in the live beetles scampering around the house.

Oh, okay. I'll try feeding live then (assuming I get these finches!). I've had some superworm escapees around here with my lizards, and those are the biggest, nastiest beetles you've ever seen. Nothing like the little mealie beetles.
