Highest quality store bought finch food?
Just curious as to what the highest quality store bought finch food is. A lot of the seeds that you guys put into your personal mixes, I can't find here and I would rather not have to order it as if I'm in a pinch and run out, well their diets will need to change anyway. I'm not opposed to supplimenting the diet. Thanks!

This stresses my comment re 'where do you live'...questions like this cannot be answered unless we know where in the world you come from.Availability varies throughout the world.

It depends on what species of finches you are raising.. I use 5-6 different seeds / millets and mix them depending on the origin of the finches in question.. I would be happy to share my recipe's for the different finches I have.. I am also a very big fan of the finch pellets such as ZuPreem and strive to make that their base diet.

I'm in Canada, I suppose I should develop my profile a little more lol.
I'm going to check out the zupreem brand. Does anyone know what the recommended amount of protein/fat is?
Thanks.

Where in Canada? There are quite a few of us now from different provinces, we may be able to help you out with what someone close to you uses.

If you are close to Montreal,, Avizoo has great quality foods. They have special blends for gouldians which I feed to all of my finches, except for my green singers who are now getting a special blend for African finches. You can also by most of the seeds separately if you prefer to mix your own blend. They also keep in stock almost any other product that you may or may not need or want. Here is their address

Re: Highest quality store bought finch food?
Seems my post got lost.
Normally, I feed my zebras and societies primarily Zupreem "natural" (not colored) pellets. The colored pellets colored their poop, and that stained the perches.
My gouldians get Lafeber's finch food (a smaller pellet), which "I think" is better than Zupreem.
I plan to try Roudybush nibbles at some point.
I switched to pellets because the birds would pick out the seeds that they want to eat from the seed mixes (light colored seeds) and leave the rest, about 50% wastage. And some of the waste is the "enrichment" pellets, so I was paying for stuff the birds don't eat. The second reason is the seed mess, hulls all over the floor when their wings flap and blow the seed hulls out of the cage. The light spray millet is the worst.
Now they get seeds as a "treat."
The gouldians however get seeds daily.
When they are breeding, I give them seeds. Seeds are supposed to be easier for them to regurgitate to the chicks than the dry ground pellets. Problem here again is they pick out the seeds they want to eat. So you have to supliment the seeds w egg to give them the protein.
I an currently going thru an experiment where the zebras were fed primarily pellets with daily egg mix when breeding, no seeds. They seem to have done quite well, with 4 currently fledged. I was afraid that they would have trouble regurgitating the pellets and feeding the chicks.
When I buy my food (both pellets and seeds), I buy enough to go 2 or 3 months. I reorder/buy more pellets when I have 2 weeks supply left (1 week to order + 1 week buffer).
