antibiotic for finches?

Post by skythrutrees » Tue Nov 20, 2007 10:12 am

I suspect my new finches might have a parasite--looks like maybe a small bit of blood in stools. They are new, so it could be stress, but I've seen bird meds, like antibiotics on websites. Has anyone tried purchsed meds online or over the counter to treat thier finches?

When my Gouldian got sick I went to Petsmart and got 3 different meds. One is an antibiotic drinking solution, you just pour it right from the bottle, replacing the water with it. You use this for 5 days according to the directions.

Blood in the stools could be worms, or intenstinal infection. You may want to consult with an Avian vet to find the best medicine to use, as I don't think that antibiotics will do anything to worms. I think you have to use a de-wormer for worms.

Wish you the best!

There is another post I found where the bird had what sounds like the same symptom and a vet diagnosed it as coccidia. I believe it's a parasite. You may want to explore this avenue. I am not a vet. I hope they get better.

We medicate our birds exclusively with Morning Bird products with great success. Many pet stores offer broad spectrum antibiotics, but we have more success using more specific treatments when possible.

We are not vets. ourselves, but we have enough experience that we can point you in the right direction given enough information.

Is the bird showing any other signs of illness like tucking it's head, fluffing or acting like it lacks energy, not eating/drinking well?

Also, how old is the bird and do you know it's genetic history?
