Funny sound in Gouldian.

Post by kinnika » Wed Dec 05, 2007 12:31 pm

I have Female Gouldian that is making a kind of clicking sound and having a slight problem swallowing. Her eyes are clear as can be she is flying around with no problem and eating and drinking good.I don't notice any breathing problems. I don't think it is mites at all but I don't know. Any suggestions?? They get an excellent diet with egg every day and good seeds and pellets. As well they get a vitamin and kelp. I really don't want to loose her.Any help will be appreciated.

Clicking sound indicates it is probably air sac mites. I would treat with Scatt asap. Air sac mites can remain dormant in the bird for some time, so just because these seem healthy doesn't mean they can't have air sac mites. All of your birds should be treated.

I concur with Sally, it sounds like airsac mites. You can use Scatt, S76, or Iverlux to treat it.

Yes, you can get any of these products shipped to you in Canada. I've never had a problem shipping to Canadian customers.

The incubation period of air sac mites can take a while, many months in some cases, watch for bobbing of the head or tail also, especially after exercise, this indicates breathing difficulties, the clicking sound usually occurs in the evening when the mites become more active, it might be accompanied by a wheezing sound (your bird isn't a 2nd hand smoker is it?), your best bet is to take the birds to a vet if you want to be sure beacuse I have read many different things about air sac mites. Scatt is a good treatment for the mites but I have mixed feelings about using it to prevent the mites, especially if your not sure...basically because it is a medicine.

One of my birds was wheezing and sneezing for a few days, I took it to the vet and it got the all clear, a few vitamins later and it is fine
