Broken Leg

Post by RobinsPigeon » Mon Aug 29, 2011 5:04 pm

Hi, I am here for some advice. I rescued a poor little baby pigeon that has a very bad broken leg. His leg is sticking out sideways and is getting caught through his wing.
All the Vet's around here want to charge an arm and a leg just to see him. I rescued him, don't have any money to take him to the vet. I want to keep him safe, fed and watered until he heals. I just don't know if he will heal up since his leg is sticking straight out.

I have read a few things on here that suggest he might heal ok because he is young. After he heals I want to take him to a park and put him back with the pigeons.

Advise from anyone and everyone please.

Thank you!

Read the section on the FIC or ladygouldian.com on broken bones. If the brake is sticking out of the skin, the pidgeon will need antibiotics. You can set a simple brake with the paper tape that won't stick to feathers and popsicle sticks or other flat sticks. The bird will likely need some heat and food/water right next to it, so it does not have to move to eat and drink. Low, shallow dishes without a high edge/lip will be alright. I hope he makes it. Nice of you to try and help.

Is the whole leg sticking out like a hip dislocation? I saw a crow with a broken leg that was broken 1/2 way up. 1/2 the leg was sticking out and was obviously dead. It was managing but I gave it my french fries so it wouldn't be hungry at least then. I hope your pigeon makes it too!

If this is a wild bird I would seek the help of a wild life rescue. They are best qualified to take care of wild birds, they usually have a vet on hand that can tend to the leg so it mend properly and medications that are dosed according to the species and weight.

If you post your city and state we might be able to help you find a group/facility to take it to.

Another alternative is to call your state's Fish and Game, they often can refer you to a rescue group.
