Quarantine multiple birds from different places

Post by Dayna » Sat Nov 05, 2011 12:33 pm

When you get birds from multiple places at one time can you quarantine them together or should you have them all seperated into seperate rooms etc...?
Owls, Goulds, European Goldfinch, Red Belly Siskins and Zebs... For now...

If you have the space, then I would quarantine them separately. That way no nasties will be passed between the new birds. If you don't have the space, then do the best you can do in the room you have. I would put them in separate cages at the very least.

I quarentine all birds in the same building. I always put birds from each source in their own cages. They all get the same routine so I don't worry about them being in the same room. Most pathogens are passed from beak to beak or where the sick bird's beak might have been. Wiped on a perch, food and water dishes. Also disease can be passed through the droppings. If you keep the birds from each source in their own cage then you aren't creating unnecessary risk to birds from the other sources.
Once you start the quarentine process, remember any new bird being brought into the enviroment may make it necessary to prolong the existing quarentined birds.

And always always feed, water and clean your original birds first then go to the new birds. With multiple birds from different places, wash hands well before servicing the next cage!
