Question about finch seed

Post by Corkysgirl » Mon Nov 07, 2011 9:39 pm

I live in a remote area and it is hard to get more than basic food for humans...forget Starbucks! And I guess nobody has domestic birds around here because there is simply no bird food, cuddle bones, or Millet sprays, or anything. I drove 50 miles today, needing colloidal silver for my finch. I had to purchase supplemental bag of seed until my case of Ecotrition arrives by mail. The only thing I could find was Audubon Society Finch Festival Wild Bird seed. Has anyone ever used wild bird seed for their domestic finches? I am just paranoid I guess, especially with a sick bird. Is there any reason why I shouldn't use this until it arrives? Anyone have a favorite place they order extra's for birds, cuddle bones, pineapple mineral blocks, millet, etc.?

I tried some of the smaller mixes...my birds do not touch them, not even my zebras.

Try ordering from either http://www.bulkbirdfood.com/ or their sister company for smaller quanities http://www.foryourbird.com/mm5/merchant.mvc

I have priced compared pellets and other foods and their prices are a bit lower and shipping is reasonable.

You live in a remote area where? Herman Brothers http://www.hermanbros-seed.com/ has a wide variety of seed but not sure if your close enough so the shipping isn't out of this world.
There's also Jones Seed Company http://www.jones-seed.com/

I live in Rumford Corner, Maine. There is one grocery store 15 miles, but it has limited food, and NO bird seed. There is one Rite Aid and it had one bag of "out of date" wild, large (not finch size) bird seed, and two gold fish flakes. WTH! There is a Walmart about 17 miles, but it only has the 8in1 Premium Parakeet Canary Finch seed for $2 and it's sprayed with orange oil and my birds won't touch it. There are no cuddlebones, millet sprays, nests, cages, egg food, or anything else. If I drive to Portland, 70 miles away which I did yesterday (I thought it was 50) for colloidal silver for my sick finch, then I can get more but not bulk. My old car can't do that too often. I can mail order, but I was feeding my 10 finches tons of greens from the garden and miscalculated the seeds when the green volume went down. Or they're eating more. We get early frosts here in the mountains and tons of snow. I am happy to hear anyone's input about mail order because I need, want, various things and can't find them sometimes on one web site. I don't mind paying shipping, but of course prefer to shop around for the best deal. I just have to make sure I don't run out of seed again so I don't have to store hop again. What I decided to do was give the 9 birds the wild seed, in addition to other foods, and the sick bird the little organic seed that is left, so I don't traumatize her any more. Thanks for your help all!

Check out these two places. Bird Supply of New Hampshire would be closest, and they have everything from seed to vitamins to breeding supplies. Abba Products is in New Jersey, they don't have quite as many things as Bird Supply of NH, but you can compare, and check shipping.

The wild bird seed is said to be not as clean as seed sold for pet birds, but in a pinch, it is better than nothing.

I checked out Amazon and they have some bird products. I don't qualify for the student Amazon Prime as I'm out of school but the Amazon Prime looks like something to look into. Thanks!
