Feathers that don't grow back...Ever

Post by hilljack13 » Fri Feb 22, 2008 8:22 pm

A long time ago when I recieved my first zebras, two female sisters. One of them picked at the others neck and it bacame bare. This bird lived longer and never grew her feathers back on her neck her entire life. Right now I may have the same issue, I have a white female that has had a small section of her neck picked by my other female. They are separated now but after two weeks there still isn't any new growth.

So is this normal for birds (zebras) to stop growing feathers that have been picked?

HJ...feathers won't grow back if the follicle gets damaged from constant plucking.

I had a similar issue and for awhile my zebra had no feathers at all under her tail, it was a very visible patch that she got from an aggressive pair.

At first I separated her but weeks later I used her as a teacher bird for my goulds, I used liquid iodine in their water and at the time one of them was showing pin feathers so I used feather fast + a higher protein diet --- a week after she moved in with them her feathers started growing back rapidly and I'm pretty sure it was because of the supplements and diet so maybe you should try that. :)
