Help! My green singer is losing feathers

Post by Chichireeo » Fri Nov 18, 2011 11:58 am

For the past two days my GS has been losing quite a few feathers, both the body feathers and a few of the wing/tail feathers. He molted in April, so I don't think it's another molt. Could it be disease?
And so far it only happens when I am not home. (only been two days, could be coincidence). I find the feathers at the bottom of the cage in batches, not continuously. He is alone. So I also suspect plucking. But then I have also seen him appear itchy, scratching his head with his foot.
His cage is cleaned out spotless every evening, so I can't imagine where feather mites could possibly hide.
I don't know what to do. He was just at the vet not long ago for check up and they found nothing in blood and urine.
What could be wrong?

If I read your post correctly, the GS is the only bird in the cage? You cannot really see mites and they can be anywhere, so, I am thinking that mites may be a problem or is there something in the air that could be irritating the skin? Cindy posted an avian medical reference. Maybe there is something in there to help. Keep us posted. You'll need to do a search for avian medical reference on the forum and you should find Cindy's post with a link that works. The forum reply doesn't let me attach a pdf document. Hope the GS gets better, but you could go back to your avian vet too.

Thanks for your reply, Deborah. Yes my male GS is all alone. After the morning batch of feathers, he did not lose more feathers for the rest of the day. I watched him. He went outside for fresh air and a little sun which got him into a better mood I think. And maybe took his mind off of itching? There may well be mites in my house, in the carpet. I also wonder if my bird has dry skin from indoor heating. His poop looks normal, so I'll watch him a few more days see if he gets better. Meanwhile I did find Cindy's links for avian medicine.
By the way, Deborah, I saw your post in the marketplace with pictures of your GS for sale. How I wish I could get my hen from you! But I'd have to fly to Texas for her.

Where do you live? I have two hens that are four months old. I don't know if it is worth it to ship one because of the airline cost, but I'm willing to if you're interested.

Deborah I just updated by profile. I'm in California. I'll PM you about the hen possibilities.

The feather loss continues. No bald spots. Poop still looks good. He still sings but does not fly for fun.
I moved him to a different cage, different room, so I can spray his old cage and room with the avian insect liquidator. I'll probably hold off spraying the bird's body for now because I am starting to suspect it's a second molt (I read on this forum of such a thing). Perhaps I triggered a second molt :?:
