I put the cuttlebone into a 1/4" wide rubber band inside the cage, and then pull the "slack" of the rubber band through the bars to the outside the cage, pulling it just tight enough to hold the cuttlebone in place. Then I use a tiny "S" hook to clip it to the cage wires, down low beside the seed tray. Since it's on the outside of the cage, the metal hook is well out of reach of the birds. The rubber band keeps the cuttlebone from sliding around or falling. :)

Those metal clips that come with cuttlebones are useless. I just take them off and throw them away.

Cindy, thank you so much for the screw driver tip! That works beautifully. I've used/tried all kind of things with varying success, but this really works and I can now put the cuttlebones on the cages and know they will stay there!

You're welcome Martie...I use to use the drill but it broke the cuttlebone. I got the ideas from watching my husband use a tool that looks like a philips screwdriver but had a blunted end to set the anchors (plastic plugs) that you sink into drywall to help hold screws in the wall. I actually used that tool for a bit but found the screwdriver with a pointed end worked better. Makes a perfect hole.

Yeah those metal clips don't work! After reading this post, I removed the cuttlebone this morning and just put it in a seed trough that has built in perch, together with his manu rose thing and his clay pick block.
Now all the blocks are organized! (except for lava stone, which I mounted flat in case he wants to stand on it - he hasn't). Hmm... I might throw a big piece of eggshell in that trough as well, see it he plays with it.

Yes, thank you for this reminder. I took all cuttlebones down today, drilled the hole w a very small manual drill and ziptied them all. You can really see as they pluck away at it, how the metal hazards increase.

Drilling a hole a using a zip-tie is a good idea.
Thanks
