Baycox or trimethoprim sulfa for coccidiosis
Which is better to treat a cocci infection? The reason I ask is that on www.ladygouldianfinch.comm she recommends baycox for prevention, and trimethoprim sulfa for treatment. But I have seen many recommendations for using baycox to treat, not just prevent.
Any experience?

There are a few threads on this topic already. Tiffany (nixty) uses Baycox...she also stated that it smells like rotten lettuce, that seems to be the only draw back.
Are your birds doing alright?

Re: Baycox or trimethoprim sulfa for coccidiosis
Thanks Cindy. I had looked at some of those; I'm just curious why Joann does not explicitly recommend baycox for treating an infection, and only gives recommendation for prevention of it. Instead she says that the trimethoprim sulfa should be used to clear up and infection. I have seen baycox so highly recommended on here by you, Tiffany, and some others. I'm curious as to which works better in experience.
I answer to your question about my birds- I'm not sure. I had posted a while back about some very watery droppings. They seemed to mostly clear up after a week or so, so I didn't treat for anything then, as I decided it must have been due to increased water intake, since the house is a little less humid with the heat running.
A few weeks later, we noticed that one of my hens was bobbing her tail constantly. She seemed find other that that, but the watery droppings came back, though not as badly as before. At that point, I went ahead and did a 7-day cycle of ronivet for everyone. The watery droppings were reduced after the treatment but still persist. Now I have occasional tail-bobbing from everyone else in that cage. The first hen is starting to show more symptoms (lethargic, tail still bobbing). I was planning on starting another cycle of ronivet tomorrow, but I'm now not sure if I would be smarter to try something else.
Currently the only meds I have are Ronivet and Tetratex but I can order others tonight if you have a recommendation on what to treat for.

Re: Baycox or trimethoprim sulfa for coccidiosis
It sounds more like something more than parasites but perhaps coccidia. If it is and you called Larraine or JoAnne ask which is better, they may recommend trimethoprim sulfa. Are their bottoms stained, does it look wet? What color are the droppings?
I would not wait and I am not sure the tetratex is the answer either. Before treating again with Ronex, I would call them. It sounds like you ma need to switch to a different treatment.
I have treated with cocci-care as a preventative, never used Baycox or needed trimethoprim sulfa. If I was to use Baycox, I would have to wait until my husband had a business meeting...I think the smell of rotten lettuce would not sit right with him.

Re: Baycox or trimethoprim sulfa for coccidiosis
I mix the Baycox in a small bath, with the doors closed to the rest of the house, and the exhaust fan running. That keeps the smell contained.
Also mix it quick and close the bottle.
Once diluted, it does not smell as bad.

Gary, you sound brave....in Florida we have the split plan, the family room is right off the main room in one of the bedrooms, central air....I would need more than an exhaust fan!!!!
