HELP ME!!!

Post by NorthernFinch » Wed Feb 13, 2008 9:34 pm

Hello everyone,

I had some problems with my finches over the holiday, but they were doing great. Until now that is. I have 1 white and 1 black hooded nun-finch. The black headed one is female, and the other is male. The haven't "done 'it'" but today i noticed something yellow hanging on the females butt. She was trying to get it off, but couldn't. Is this serious? I am only 12 so i don't know A LOT about finches. Should i like try to get it off? Anyway, thanks for reading this and hopefully giving me a comment!

It's hard to say what the problem is. Is it maybe poop stuck to her feathers? Has she laid any eggs or anything? What else is going on? Try to be specific. We'll try to help.

It does sound like some poop. One of my females had a dirty but a month or so ago, but she was with another female so I figured it had to be poop. It comes off. Give them an extra change of water and see if they bath more. It will help wash it off.

Ok, well. It is yellow and dried up. She tries to shake it off, She has never laid any eggs since we had her. I noticed this on wednesday, and it is now friday. I would take her to a vet, but it is the middle of winter here. Got answers??? Let me know!!!

Thanks,
NorthernFinch

If it will make you feel better (which it probably would) then by all means take her to an avian vet. You may want to give a shallow dish with about 1 inch of water so she can take a bath, if you haven't already given her that. It might come off in the bath.

Thanks for the info, but I live in Nova Scotia Canada. It is the middle of winter and i'm worried about them freezing to death. I haven't tried the nath. I'll see if that works. Have any of you had/have or know anyone that has/had a Black-Hooded nun-finch??? I just don't know if this is normal. I would take her to an aviar place...but i don't know if there are any here... Anyway...thanks for the info!!!

Might be tricky but you might consider, take her out and giver her a look over to make sure that whatever it is, is not stuck to skin. If its just feathers you might have to do a little tug. It wont bother her long.

I have both black and white-headed nuns, but it either sounds like poop or a soft-shelled egg. Either way you can ease it off with a wet tissue if you think it's bothering her too much. If it looks like an egg I'd up her calcium - is she getting eggshell or oystershell?
