Gouldian chick death

Post by gouldianscy » Fri Dec 30, 2011 7:15 pm

since I cannot upload an image here I posted a couple of images of a dead gouldian chick on my blog and you cna see them here
http://ladygoulds.blogspot.com/2011/12/ ... death.html
I have 2 young pairs from the 15 that I breed and their chicks die when thjey are about 5-6 days old and you can see the neck like the one's in the photos that is not normal. It is kind of long and curved.
Any idea what would be the cause and how to cure it?

I agree.. it doesn't really look like a gouldian chick. Do you have other bird species?

if it's not a gouldian then it's a canary :o
these are the only birds I keep. Guys, the photo was taken today and it is a gouldian chick. It doesn' t look like a gouldian chick to you because of its neck.
Please comment on the chick not if's a gouldian or not

Whatever it is, it looks like it died of dehydration and starvation. The chick was not fed. Normally the crop filled with fiid will give the appearance of a fat, short neck... a crop without food shows the bone stucture as it is... and yes, it is curved like that. The head is lifted up so that would accentuate the curve.
Sorry for the loss. :(

thanks, its simblings have full crops so they can't just left this to starve in the nest I would say.also they raised another next without problems. the second pair with this problem raised a nest of 4, 3 blues and a yellow previsously. So it is not that they leave them to starve, I think.

I agree with Candace and like I said in my post it looks like they did not feed it. Other then that it would be hard to tell you why it died. To me it wasn't the neck that made it not look gouldian it was the absence of nodules.
Very sorry for your loss, I hope they do better with the remains chicks.

Parents can and do stop feeding a chick, for who know what reason, or it could have been out-competed for food by its siblings.

I found one of my chicks dead under the other chicks. One day there were 5 heads in the nest, the next day only 4. #5 was dead under the other 4.

red colour of skin indicates dehydration whether it is a gouldian or canary. The crop is empty so it appears to have starved and/dehyrated. This happens in both canary and gouldian clutches as in other breeds as well. Could be a congenital problem or simply bad luck-sometimes you never know. Sorry your chick died
