I took people's advice and have quit putting vits in the water, but still want to give them to the birds. Is it good to mix it with their grit? I give them oyster shells as grit. Is that good enough or do they need granite or something too? If so should both be available and maybe mix the vits with both? I have minerals in a seperate cup so they eat what they want. The vits are a powder and it's suggested to put it on fruit, but I haven't been giving them fruit just Romain lettuce. What type of fruit is good for feeding vitamins? Or is it just as well to mix it with grit instead?
Thanks!
David

Re: More vitamin questions
Why do you want to give your birds vitamins? How often?
I only give my birds vitamins once a week when they are breeding or appear unwell and I always give it in their drinking water so I know they are getting some.
Carrots and brocolli are great for finches after being minced in a food processor. You can give minced corn too.

I want them to always have a good broad and ballanced supply of vitamins. Why not?L in Ontario wrote:Why do you want to give your birds vitamins? How often?

Re: More vitamin questions
If they are eating quality bird seed, fresh eggfood and the veggies listed above with cuttlebone available in the cage at all times - they don't need to "always have a good broad and ballanced supply of vitamins". It's too much to give them extranopEda wrote:I want them to always have a good broad and ballanced supply of vitamins. Why not?L in Ontario wrote:Why do you want to give your birds vitamins? vitamins all the time. They don't get any in the wild other than what is in their natural foods.
If you give them vits once a week when they are breeding is enough and for the rest of the year - maybe once a month.

Like Liz said, fresh veggies, eggfood, and cuttlebone are more than enough. That is all my birds get in addition to see and the occasional grit

Re: More vitamin questions
I do once twice week as well, but I have just always done it year round. I will say I buy two kinds of seed, half unfortified finch and half abba fortified finch.
