Missing feathers

Post by LindaE » Wed Oct 25, 2006 10:31 pm

Hi! I'm new to this so forgive my ignorance & lack of proper manners :? I have 4 Spice finch who are very active. One, I call her Scarey Spice, is missing neck feathers. Is there a special diet to help her grow better feathers? None of the others are picking on her as far as I can tell.

Hi Linda,

If the feather follicles haven't been damaged then the feathers should grow back when the bird molts. There is a product called Feather Up that may or may not speed this process up. I have a male Cordon Bleu that was missing feathers on his neck when I got him almost a year ago. He is still missing feathers despite everything I have tried to get them to regrow. His mate just loves him so much she can't help herself.

I recently received a Gouldian hen who had most of her neck feathers missing. In additional to her seed, I offered her the eggfood that I give to my breeding birds and Juvenile Gouldians and she regrew all her missing feathers within the first 3 weeks I had her.

I think offering your bird a diet higher in protein and a good vitamin will help it to regrow its feathers - as long as there has been no damage done as TammieB mentioned. The base of my eggfood is simple - Gold Label Feast Softfood and hardboiled eggs (run through a potato ricer) in a 50/50 ratio. To that I add Daily Essentials 3 and bee pollen granules.

Then to that I will rotate the following: Soaked seed, chopped veggies and Avi-Culture probiotic. For my breeding birds I will also add ProBoost Super Max and a couple of times per week Potent Brew.

Hi Tammies!
Thanks for all the help. :D I'll try adding to my egg feed and see if that helps.
