Once in a while I get a young bird that has been weaned for a week or a month and suddenly it seems to give up. It gets fluffed and sleeps a lot, doesn't eat or drink and then passes away within a day or two.
Anyone know or have ideas what to do to help these ones "get over the hump" so to speak. It's a shame they get this far and then just fade away for no known reason - all the while their siblings are doing great, colour up and move in to adulthood just fine.

Here's an article I bookmarked ages ago just in case I needed it. Maybe it could help you a little.

Re: Youngsters' Failure to Thrive
I always treat my fledges soon after fledging with Cocci Care, then Ronex 12%; each one for five to seven days. Then, I give them Probiotic for five days. This has kept the occurrence of Coccidiosis, and other protozoan and fungal types of problems with the young. These are used as a preventative, at this stage, for the young to have a chance to grow and become stronger.
Debbie-That article is great and confirms my own observations in a large flight with young. Good Article! Thanks.

Re: Youngsters' Failure to Thrive
I've experienced the same.
I treat mine with Ronex 12% a week after fledging. But still I've lost 6 juveniles this year about 7-21 days after weaning mysteriously. They fluff up and within 2 days their gone. Thats a 1 out of 12 loss. I was told by another LG breeder that that is a acceptable and natural loss for young????
I have not done the Cocci Care but Im going to order some now. I dont like to lose any chicks.
