my zebra finched died today

Post by ethannadine » Fri Nov 03, 2006 12:10 pm

just bought a pair, a male and female a week ago and i've noticed that the female stays in the nest while the male is outside the nest, sometimes they are together in the nest but the male one is always outside by himself. then today we just saw the male one lying dead on the floor of the cage. what could have caused this? i placed them in my garage, the garage is not big enough for a car and the cover is steel grills so it's wide open for fresh air and light, no direct sunlight... i have a pair of lovebirds i keep upstairs in my terrace under a roof but outdoors and i've had them for a year and they're okay... i keep the finches in my garage because their cage is aluminum and it rains alot here in the philippines, so what should i do? the female that is left alone looks fluffed when it ate tonight, should i buy her a new companion or what? should i just buy one or one and one more pair? thanks.

I am sorry to hear about you losing your Zebra Finch.

You mentioned that you are keeping them outdoors? Were the birds previously kept outdoors? What about predators, such as cats? They could spook the birds to the point of them panicking during the night and the birds can fatally injure themselves by hitting the sides of the cage.

It could also be stress. Some birds don't take the stress of being moved to a new home/environment very well. If your remaining Zebra is looking stressed/fluffed, then I recommend you bring it indoors and provide some type of heat source for it.

Finches are social birds and do better with other finches than they do alone. I would recommend that you get another finch for company. But I would wait till you know that your current finch is healthy before doing so.

I'm so sorry!!! I know that feels so awful. One of my two cordon bleus died just two weeks after I got them. Is your garage free of chemicals that could be causing toxic fumes?? Even old gasoline and chemicals on the floor can produce fumes.
