air sac mites s76 vs scatt

hi,

at a bird show last weekend i purchased 2 florida fancy zebra finches, both hens. i have them in quarantine away from my other birds. they are active, eating well, still settling in to their new home. I notice at night, the split silver one, sounds like she has air sac mites. during the day, i don't hear the clicking, but at night it is definite. i also don't have the open mouth breathing i have read is associated with the mites.

i plan on treating the birds regardless, as well as treating my others. can anyone direct me on the pros and cons of s76 vs scatt?

s76 seems so much less invasive than scatt, and seems to treat other parasites as well, that i lean toward that, but ma not sure. i have called the breeder of these birds...she claims of course that none of her birds have had air sac mites in the past....

Do a search on old posts in this or any other bird forum and you will be overwhelmed by discussions on Scatt vs. S76.

My philosophy is, if I can catch 'em I Scatt 'em, if I can't then I'll put S76 in the water.

i use s76 i have to import it from the USA as its prescriptin only in the UK

I agree with zookeeper - if I just had a few birds to treat, then Scatt is my choice. It is easy to administer, just one drop under the birds wing (easier than trying to do it on the back of the neck) one time unless you have severe infection. In that case, you would re-treat in 6 weeks.

With S76, if you are treating just a few birds, you can administer 1 drop on the bird - but you need to do so for 5 consectutive days.

If you administer it in the water, you need to do so for 2 days and then repeat in 3 weeks. Plus it is more difficult to mix the correct dosage for just 2 birds - I think S76 is more ideal if you are treating a larger number of birds.
