Gouldian Molt

Post by WeimerHeimer » Thu Dec 13, 2012 4:49 pm

Been at keeping Gouldians now for about 2 years. Ever notice how Gouldians "molt" at difference rates? Some go through it real fast ..... others take FOREVER.

Why?

Any tips on how to help them through the process faster and make it less stressful on them?
Zebras, Gouldians, Cordon Bleu's, Waxbills, Java Rice, Societies, Shaft-tails, Orange Weavers, Canaries, Conure, Parrotlet, Cockatiel, & Goffin Cockatoo.

I'm also wondering this, as my little guy is going through a molt that seems to be rough on him. The other male molted in October and it went quickly and didn't seem to affect him. His buddy is now molting and it seems much more intense, plus it's causing him to take a lot of little naps in the daytime.

If I walk by, he immediately wakes up, and he also eats (lots of egg) and sings and seems in good health otherwise, so I'm assuming the sleepies are just the molt.

Anyhow, I've also wondered about the differences and how to help him get through it quicker. I give him plenty of egg and have raised the house temp for him. He has a heat lamp and prefers to sit there. I've heard about a supplement that can speed it, but am a little leery, especially since the other bird is not currently molting.
