Star Baby Wing Injured

Post by carlamay » Thu Jan 17, 2013 6:59 pm

I truly thought this little guy had escaped as we moved all of the babies out into their own cages and he disappeared for a week! I feared that he had been a doggie snack or was hiding in my plants...This morning I thought I was dreaming when there he was sitting on the seed bowl! He has made himself a little area up in the artificial plants - but he doesn't seem able to fly and his wing is being held at a weird angle. He is a nightmare to get a picture of but maybe you can tell something. I would appreciate advise/opinions please.

Star Wing-better pictures

I have always had a hard time posting pictures larger than thumbnail but they seem quite small so here are the Small View so perhaps you can see better and advise. Thanks, Carla

Very cute fledge! He does look like his wing is injured. I had a female YF star with a similar wing issue. I gave her a ladder to get to the perches and nest etc. She was one of my best breeders, despite her injured wing.

It looks similar to the injuryt my red star finch Fruit has. He holds his right wing at a similar angle, and has a lot of scar tissue from where he shattered his wing bones. He was placed in a hospital cage foor 6 weeks, and medicated via the vet. He gets around quite well on several ladders and very thick perches. Looks like your young one is doing the same.

I'll merge these two threads together, so you don't get replies in two different places. I'm just glad this baby turned up, as if it was out of the cage after all this time, chances are that it would not have made it. It does look like an injured wing, and I don't know that there is much you can do for it at this point. It probably got hung up in one of the plants, or the cage bars, or the nest--no telling, but these fledges do seem to get into trouble. It looks like it can still reach the perch, but you might want to put a seed dish on the floor of the cage. You can also put a small, very shallow water dish on the floor. If you can remove it to a hospital cage, fine, but if not, keep an eye on it for any puffiness.
