I have a blue back male Lady Gouldian that is about 2 years old. I noticed that he seemed to be sleeping a lot with his head tucked in. He's not puffed up and has a normal stool. I took him out of the aviary and put him in a hospital cage to watch him. He was more active and was singing, still sleeping but not as much. I kept him there for several days and he seemed ok so I put him back in the aviary this morning. Once again he has slept most of the morning, not puffed up at all. He is up on a limb and has never been sleeping on the bottom of the aviary. Should I be concerned? Should I do anything else. I feed high protein seed blend for winter from Frisky Finches and add Feather Glow, liquid vitamins with iodine to their water.
Thank you,
Connie

Re: Sleeping Lady Gouldian
I would offer extra heat in one corner of your cage for him and keep an eye on any changes. There really isn't any symptoms to say what could be wrong. I'm not familiar with feather glow, it possible your giving too much iodine and/or vitamins? How often do you add it to the water?
good luck

I'm using 1 tbsp per gallon daily per the instructions on the bottle. All of my others are acting normal. Should I pull back on the feather glow? I've got full spectrum lighting in the aviary. I'll add a heat lamp to one corner.

I don't add any supplements to my birds water but would think once in a while you'd want to offer just plain water. I hope someone who does offer additives to water can chime in here.

Re: Sleeping Lady Gouldian
I have more males than females in the aviary right now. I'm having a hard time finding another hen in my area. I don't have any nest in the aviary. When he's in a separate cage he acts completely normal but when I put him in the aviary he tucks his head in and sleeps a lot. Could the odd number make him act that way? If so, will it be better to keep him in the other cage alone until I can find another hen? It may be several months.

Re: Sleeping Lady Gouldian
I haven't found the ratio hen to male making a difference like that. Could it be that he is being picked on by the others? Is he new to that cage that he would just need time to adjust to his new environment?
I'd just watch for any changes or symptoms and go from there.

Re: Sleeping Lady Gouldian
I saw my read head male peck at him once this morning. I've had him the longest and they were all put in the aviary at the same time, about 3 months ago. I'm confused about his behavior.
