Green singer finch lost a TON of down feathers ????

Post by Anneka » Sun Jul 07, 2013 4:02 pm

2 days ago I saw a bunch of down feathers on the bottom of my green singers' cage. I was able to easily tell which one of the two was dropping them.
The folowing day, I genty held him, inspected his body, and when I lifted his wings and ran my fingers under his wings, all the down feathers came off as they were hardly attached to the skin. Same thing with the rump area

Chest and belly and head - no problem there at all.

There is NO plucking going on, and obviously the other GS is NOT plucking him either because it would not be happening under the wings or in the rump area. They are friends plus I observe them during the day. Their cage is where I am most of the time during the day.

Has anyone experienced this with a finch or a canary :?:

To drop all feathers under the wings and in the rump area w/in 2 days ??? !!!! This has never happened to any of my birds before and I have head birds for many yrs.

He is going to see my (very good) avian vet asap this week.
