Need moisture in bird room

Post by zeenie » Tue Dec 31, 2013 8:39 pm

I need to increase moisture in my bird room.
What is the difference between a vaporizer and humidifier?
Should I use cool air or warm air?
Does anyone know if the Holmes Ultra Humidifier (for 29.99) is safe without having any Teflon or any other chemical?
It is the only one at Target that is in my price range.

I decided to go with one from CVS not too expensive and a Sunbeam.
The Sunbeam has antimicrobial product protection so I think that means something bad is mixed in with the plastic.
I am calling Sunbeam tomorrow and the CVS 800 number. I will give a update asap with these 2 model numbers.
I read the post by Nanajennie but no one answered,
Is warm or cold better? Does it matter?

I have a cool mist humidifier, but I don't remember the brand, and my birdroom is dark at this time. It is nothing fancy, just a basic humidifier, but I wanted a large tank so I wouldn't have to refill as often. It is a good idea to have a hygrometer nearby so you can monitor the humidity.

My humidifer is a Hunter, model 33201. I have had it for some years now, so it may not be available any longer, and I don't remember where I bought it, except that it was locally--probably Walmart or Walgreens.

BTW, welcome to the forum! There's lots of good reading at the Finch Information Center, linked at left, and the members are always ready to help. If you put your general location in your profile, it helps to answer locale-specific questions later on.

I called CVS and of course they cant give me an answer and told me no one can. I sure hope someone might know and can tell me about this CVS vaporizer model 2100NCVS.

Here is the description for your humidifier on Amazon:
Breathe easier and sleep more comfortably with this cool-mist humidifier. Designed for large rooms up to 1175 square feet, the unit provides a NiteGlow night light and an output capacity of 2 gallons every 24 hours. Its airtight, watertight, Tote Away tank offers a built-in handle for convenient transport and a large refill port to simplify filling. Three whisper-quiet fan speeds make it easy to adjust the humidity output rate, while the adjustable humidistat works to maintain the desired humidity level. The low-maintenance humidifier also comes with a permanent PermaWick filter, and its antimicrobial properties, which are incorporated into the plastic parts and the wick, inhibit the growth of mold, fungi, and bacteria. Even more, its regulated water-release system eliminates stagnant water while preventing mineral build-up on the wick or filter, which can impede performance in ordinary evaporative humidifiers. The unit requires routine cleaning and maintenance depending on use and individual conditions, and its base and tank clean up easily by hand or in the dishwasher. Ideal for a child's room, living room, or home office, the 74-watt cool-mist humidifier measures approximately 13-1/2 by 11 by 11-1/2 inches and carries a five-year limited warranty.

Your humidifier has the same description as the CVS I have.
'antimicrobial properties, which are incorporated into the plastic parts' inhibit the growth of mold, fungi, and bacteria.'
That is the feature I was concerned about. So maybe this CVS vaporizer is ok because it is like yours.

Anyway, I am going with the Sunbeam swm2411 Warm mist humidifier.
I called Sunbeam and they said it does not have Teflon or any other harmful material for birds.
It also has antimicrobial properties in the plastic.
I am choosing the Sunbeam because it has a humidistat control and a separate fan control knob and it was selling for $40 and I got it on clearance for 9.99!

The CVS Warm Steam Vaporizer just plugs in and mist starts, not what I want and more importantly not what my birds need.

So.. fellow birds owners looks like this Sunbeam is a go! =D>

Thank you Sally I am looking around the FIC, it is great!

No one buy the Sunbeam mentioned here.
It sounds like a 1970's Mr. Coffee maker. and get this,
the owners manual says noise normal, to lower noise, set on low.
That is the biggest joke I ever heard and even on low it sounds like a bag of popcorn getting ready to go full blast.
The knob to turn the humidistat is so tight you have to hold the unit to turn it.
I never seen a product made so bad.
And the CVS Vaporizer with no humidistat and speed control is as silent as it gets. Go figure.

Here is a web page with the difference between a vaporizer and humidifier:
http://www.diffen.com/difference/Humidi ... _Vaporizer

Noise is louder with humidifiers then with vaporizers
The main difference is the vaporizer boils water to make steam where the humidifier doesn't, therefore humidifiers emits cold vapors and vaporizers emit hot vapors.

I wouldn't imagine that even if they used teflon or a PTFE product, which I would doubt because there really isn't any reason you would need anti-stick, the product would never get hot enough to cause concern (500F)

I know several people who use this for their babies (human), and are really happy with it: http://www.amazon.com/Crane-Adorable-Ul ... B007P9QXRI

I have an ultrasonic humidifier.
But I have not used it yet.
What I like about the ultrasonic humidifier vs what my parents used for me is, NO HEAT. The thing my parents used for me when I was a kid generated steam, so there was a heating element in it boiling water.
The humidifier is for me. Sometimes the humidity drops so low that my nose dries up and hurts.

I am very glad you posted this thread, as you mentioned, I asked this same question and got nowhere.

I have been alternating my vaporizer and humidifier for a few weeks with no problems. Both moisten the air. I really like the link Debbie posted between the difference. It mentioned that the vaporizer has less risk of producing mold and bacteria. That was my main concern.

Thanks :)
