My female zebra finch's vent is bleeding

Hello,

I just noticed that my female zebra finch's vent is bleeding. I found the egg on the floor and I'm thinking maybe this is the cause of it. I've seen an egg w/ a little bit of blood on the shell a long time ago w/ my another female zebra finch but this time, her vent is covered w/ quite blood and I'm very worried. I check her time to time and she seems to be okay eating & flying, except she is trying to clean her vent (she is probably uncomfortable w/ the bloody vent).

I just hope that it's not internal bleeding. If someone has seen something like this or opinion/suggestion, I'm greatly appreciated.

I made an appointment w/ the vet tomorrow. I just checked her vent outside of the cage again (she hates me doing it) and it seems better.

Sorry I can't help in this situation - I've never had that happen with any of my birds.

Please keep us posted on what the Vet says / said.

Hi L,

Thank you for your concern! She's fine. She hasn't bleeding since. I didn't take her to the vet, but asked the specialist and she told me that If it happens with egg laying it usually means the cloaca walls are weak and will prolapse (fold inside out) and that can be fatal. But when I told her she hasn't bleeding since and she's been active, eating, drinking, bathing normally, then she said my bird sounded okay, but I needed to give her Calcium Plus for a week, and after that every other day for another week.

Because I got her 3 months ago, she probably wasn't given enough calcium at the pet shop. I give her Calcium Plus now and she eats egg, eggshell, cuttlebone quite a lot.

Sounds like she is doing most excellent now - keep up the great work with her. Do you have a mate for / with her?

Hello L!

Yes, she's w/ one of my male zebra finches. This male didn't have a mate for 3 years but he immediately fell in love w/ her as soon as he saw her. Maybe because she sounds, looks and acts like his mama who passed away in July (it was very very hard for me to loose her). They're always together now. So I hope they live happily together for a long time.

Yes hopefully they will be happy together for a long long time. Be sure to NOT have any nest in the cage so they won't be encouraged to produce any eggs. Enjoy!
