debbie276 -- Agreed.

Also remember that you'll need to clean the entire cage super thoroughly with a mite spray with permethrin or similar.

Unfortunately, you may not be able to rid them of mites until they fledge because you'll need to remove all nesting and disinfect the nests.

I've never had owl finches before, if the gouldians are being successfully reared and weaned by the fosterers then it's unlikely to be bengie disease or asm, from reading other members comments it sounds like the begging pattern could be the reason as suggested by Cindy.
I had a pair of first time society parents rear parrot finch chicks with no problems while they were in nest, once they fledged the society parents took a panic attack and were terrified of the chicks for first few days, the only way the chicks could get near enough to parents to get fed was to go back into nest box were parents fed them again, they got used to chicks after about 4 days of this and then continued to feed them on perch, Only for returning to nest they could have starved during first few days.

I use a product similar to this in all nest boxes during breeding

the ones mentioned by debbie could be used if a mite problem already exists
