Confused yet again

Post by Harley2013 » Wed Jul 30, 2014 6:57 pm

Okay, so..... When I got Taz and Dingo ( lady gouldins) I had them upstairs in my darker bedroom, with a light on them during the day to replicate day/night. I came to the knowledge that Taz had airsac mites also in March, so we bought SCATT for them. That since has been cured. Now, I moved them downstairs in March after airsac treatment when Harley passed in March? ( without light) our downstairs has many mirrors, so light bounces around and it is quite bright, so I didn't put light on them. 4 months pass, and we have been running air conditioning, probably keeping it about 68-70 inside and recently ( with in the past 2-3 weeks) Taz has been dropping MAJOR feathers. He is approximately 1 year old or so, still has not completely molted into his head colors from being a juvenile, but the feathers he is dropping is crazy! Dingo seems to be fine. Is Taz molting, should input the light back on them, I have been "tring" to feed high proteins, but the both are so picky. They like nothing. I even bought egg mixture, tried mixing it I seed, to no avail. This is the bulb I " was" using, I don't even know if it made a difference or if it is the right bulb. At the time I was using it, it was mainly to give them daylight, night schedule because my bedroom was darker and not much light came into it.

I couldn't read the label well to see what it said about full spectrum or not, but I could read that is contains mercury. So, I would not buy that type again. I buy Zoomed Tropical bulbs from PetSmart. I also bought the Feather Bright bulb for birds online. Gouldians are sensitive to cold temperatures and a draft can cause them to become sick quickly. The really should not be kept in temperatures below 70 F. I keep my bird room at 77-82 F. Hotter in the summer and closer to 70 in winter. The gouldian looks like he is molting. Give him eggfood and/or sprinkle crushed cuttle bone over the food.

I noticed your bulb said 6500K, you really want something more in the 5000k to 5700k range and not higher. I'd use a different light if you are going to continue to use one.
Sure does look like he's molting, he must have been "stuck in molt" if he's a year old and still had juvenile feathers.
Mine are used to being outside and temps as low as 50F do not bother them at all. They molt in the spring as the temps go up. If you think he is under the weather you might want to give a bit of extra heat right now though. I like to use a reptile ceramic heater because it doesn't emit a light 24/7 disturbing them at night.

best of luck

Okay thank you. He doesn't "act" under the weather, still active and eating, no obvious signs of cold or infection I can see. Although since I got them both( at the same time) they are the pickiest eaters. My canary( Harley) was the healthiest eater. He ate anything and everything given to him. Is it really necessary to go back to the light if the room they are in is bright enough to give them day/ night schedule? I do place them out on the patio once or twice a week weather permitting for a bit of sunshine.

As long as you have a window or two in the room you should be fine. :)
