Need help with balding gouldian female

Post by vienneparis » Fri May 08, 2015 2:26 am

Hello Finch Friends,

I have a blue female gouldian, Galadriel, who laid a clutch of 6 eggs at the end of March. She diligently sat on those eggs for almost 3 weeks. When I finally candled the eggs and saw that they were duds, I removed the eggs from the nest. The next day, I noticed that Gala was almost bald around the back of her head and neck. I couldn't tell whether she was plucked by her mate or just shedding. I didn't see her mate or any other bird in the aviary going after her. Just to be safe, I removed her from the aviary and placed her in a cage. I provide her with seeds, eggfood, cuttlebone, crushed egg shells, kelp powder, and daily greens. I also treated her with Iverlux.

So far, she's not losing more feathers but also not growing back her lost feathers either. What else can I do to help her grow back her feathers?

Thanks

Gouldians as a general rule will not grow back non essential feathers till their next molt.
Sounds like you are offering her what she needs. The eggfood, is that hard boiled egg? I'm not sure what is in the commercial eggfood but a hard boiled egg will definitely give her what she needs.
Best of luck

I agree with Debbie. I had a few that didn't grow back their head feathers until the next molt. They looked bald-ish for a long time. LOL

The eggfood is my homemade "egg bread", which is cornmeal baked with eggs, flax seed, crushed oyster shells. My birds like this mix so I've stuck with it.

@Toddmin, it's sad to see her so bald. Guess I'll have to get used to the look, at least until her next molt :(
