I'm sorry about your baby. That's so sad. Poor little one.
I'm glad to hear you're offering egg now and you know for the future.
It really doesn't take long. You can even do scrambled eggs in the microwave. I mash them up with a fork and mix in some other items, but you could even just offer the eggs as-is and it would be very beneficial. Egg freezes well too, so you could make up a batch, freeze the extra and give them a spoonful daily.
I would definitely offer larger or multiple food (and water) bowls so they never run out. They have very, very fast metabolisms and they can literally die in a matter of a few hours without food (and if they've gone without food on a regular basis, they would die much faster since they probably don't have any real fat stores.)
The running out of food issue may have also caused feeding problems with the parents. It arises from their instincts in nature.
In nature, they breed during times of abundance. If, for some reason, that abundance disappears, many birds will abandon the nest and/or toss the babies. It sounds cruel, but it's to save the babies from a slow, painful, drawn out death, while maximizing the parents' chances of survival.
So if you were running out of food or didn't offer suitable food, that could have triggered their instincts to abandon the babies and stop feeding.
It is a bit curious, as societies are known for their great parenting skills (and they're one species that has never lived in the wild. They're the only breed of fully domesticated finches.) But even so, continual running out could have triggered those "abandon/stop feeding" instincts.

The body was weakened by the lack of food and the infection took hold... the lack of food did not cause the bacteria. Keep an eye on the family, if anyone else goes down or appears ill I would order meds asap. Terri at glamorous gouldians.com recommended either Trimethoprim sulfa or enrofloxin.
It treats coccidia also. I would also order Ronex 12%... these are all good products to have on hand just in case.
