Help - baby bird can't fly. :(

Post by carcoozie » Sun Jun 21, 2015 3:50 pm

I have 2 baby gouldians that fledged last week. They have both been fine. Today we came home and one little guys is on the floor of the cage. He's hopping around picking at food. He's trying to fly but can't make it more than a couple inches. Does this sound like injury or illness? I put a perch down low for him and he hopped up and his sibling and parents soon came to visit. One of his wings does look like it is drooping a little.

carcoozie...Has he ever been able to fly or is this new? I wonder if he has an injury of some sort. Are his parents still feeding him? I would suggest taking him out so that you could inspect his body, but my concern is that might disrupt the parents feeding. I would keep an eye on him and see how he does over the next few days.

ginene - he has been able to fly prior to this. Mom and dad have been down to visit, but haven't fed although it's only been a short amount of time. It seems like an injury to me as well because he seems ok otherwise. Actually while I was writing this dad came down to feed him. :) I hope it is just a slight injury he is able to recover from. [-o< I will be keeping an eye on him - thanks!

carcoozie...GREAT news that dad continues to feed while this little one is mending and weaning. If you notice this little one is begging yet getting no food or starting to become weak...go ahead and try to supplement with some bird formula. If I can do it...anyone can! Lol!!! Hopefully the injury is not serious and dad will continue to supplement. I keep Exact hand feeding formula on hand in my bird room for emergencies. I always add a bit of infant (stage 1) applesauce and some Pumpkin Puree (baking isle @ you local supermarket) so that fledglings are more likely to eat. I have had to practically force feed a 15 day old Green Singer fledge, as her parents abandoned her @ fledge. So...keep an eye on things...listen for begging...watch for weaning (eating & drinking independently) and don't be afraid to supplement with hand feedings if mom/dad are slacking a bit ;)

Btw...for hand feedings, I use a banding tool as a spoon...but many others have had success using flat toothpicks! :)

ginene - baby bird appears fine! :D I guess he must have just banged his wing or something - so glad he is ok!

Glad your baby is ok! Maybe he landed badly or bumped into something and lost a bit of confidence. Regardless, very happy for both of you.

derk, Thank you! I do think he must have tweaked his wing somehow, but he seems perfect now. :D
