Is this birdie diarrhea?
I have a sick gouldian I posted about a few days ago. She seems to be doing a little better, but her poop looks real watery to me. What do you think?

Any leafy greens? That will usually make droppings loose.

Is this the one you treated with sulfamethazine sodium and possibly coccidiostat?

The two things I notice about that dropping is that it's watery and green. That makes me wonder about liver problems or even what begins it is eating, which can cause watery and colored droppings. Sometimes, if I give the finches lettuce or fruit, their droppings are more watery and take not the color of what they ate.

Yes, I was wondering if the droppings indicated coccidiosis. What do you think? Shavings are the substrate but I put a piece of paper under her to get a better look. They just look green on the shavings. I am also in Central Florida. She seems to be more active the past few days activity wise...debbie276 wrote: Is this the one you treated with sulfamethazine sodium and possibly coccidiostat?

Re: Is this birdie diarrhea?
It is my understanding that a bird with coccidiosis will fluff and not be active, lose weight, have watery droppings which are dark green, tacky and smelly. Not sure if that fits your symptoms.

Re: Is this birdie diarrhea?
debbie276 - That's a very accurate description of a bird with cocci.
I did want to note that I've seen a couple finches with a more atypical presentation. They had the green, tacky droppings, but weren't fluffed and obviously sick. (Granted, they weren't bright eyed and bushy tailed as a healthy bird should be either. Sort of a middle ground.)
I'm not sure whether they had just contracted cocci or just weren't as profoundly affected as some others (the 4 birds in question were left on my doorstep a few years ago with a note saying they hoped I could care for them. So I had no history on them.)
Just wanted to note that in case the droppings were consistent but the birds weren't acting "sick". Some can have an atypical presentation.

Did you use any probiotics after your sulfa treatment? You can also use Guardian Angel, it contains probiotics also. Some treatments can be rough on the gut. After any treatment keep the diet simple.
