SocietyBird I am so, so sorry. I cannot imagine. What a hole you must feel in your heart, especially just before the holidays. Do you mind if I ask what region of Ontario you're in?
A pair of Gouldians, Red Cheeked CB's, Orange Cheeked Waxbills, Javas, and Cutthroats. And, two canaries. And, 3 kids, a dog and a patient, patient husband.

I have been busy past couple of weeks and have taken this morning to study this. You are very knowledgeable, if you don't mind me asking what do you do? I am wondering about the transmission of toxoplasmosis to the birds and also to other living beings. From what I read the blackspot is just the visible sign of the infection, probably necrosis visible because the birds skin is transparent. Toxoplasmosis is transmitted by cat feces which is why pregnant women are told to stay away from cat boxes. I saw some mention in an article about bird feces as a source of transmission. From what I read the "blackspot" infection is actually toxoplasmosis. I also have a question about transmission from birds to humans on this. I agree with you and Sally that this thread would be very beneficial in the infectious diseases link.
It seems feces is the source and probably keeping sanitary conditions would prevent this infection and not the supplements some websites are selling as you mentioned. I would like more information about this.

Toxo is a parasite of warm blooded vertebrates with a principal reservoir in cats and transmitted via their feces but any number of infected species can be secondary vectors.
Species susceptibility to infection is variable but incompletely documented. The organism is widespread and many are exposed to it but actual symptomatic disease or death is uncommon in immunocompetent adult animals. Real frequency is under diagnosed [its difficult and expensive] and under reported except for large outbreaks in commercially important situations. Even infection in humans is under reported in most countries.
The black spot is a sign of disease in chicks, a visible manifestation of liver, spleen and/or gut necrosis visible through the thin newborn's skin. Seems that toxo is not the only organism that can cause this.
Something some enterprising grad student could study.
