An Order Of Morningbird Products

Post by lovezebs » Sun Jan 24, 2016 7:31 pm

Hello Fellow Finchlings.

I am about to put in an order for some Morningbird Products, and I need some information. Are some of these sort of doubling up on similar products to treat the same issues. Any input would be helpful.

Amoxitex-Antibiotic Powder
3 oz. $34.00

Probiotics-Live microbial supplement
3oz. $15.50

Feather Fast-Aids and promotes successful moults
3oz. $12.50

Ronex-Protozoal infection treatment
3oz. 19.00

Tetratex-Broad spectrum antibiotic
3oz. $31.00

Cocci Care-Treatment for protozoal intestinal infections
2oz. $13.00

Worm Away-Eliminates intestinal worms
2oz. $17.00

Are all of these worthwhile having on hand? Or are there some that are not really necessary? I am definitely not rich, so don't really want to spend a bunch of money if not necessary.

Thanks :-)

Years ago, I bought just about all the Morning Bird products. I like them, but I found that some of them were never used.

Feather Fast is supposed to aid with the molt, but I think you can do just as well with eggs and a good diet, especially if you already are using a general vitamin.

Worm Away I use when I quarantine, as if any birds I am purchasing have spent time in outside aviaries, they need worming. Also many feel that if you feed any live food like live mealworms, worming them once in a while can get rid of any critters they may have picked up in the live food.

I used to keep the other items on hand, but haven't in ages. Some of them simply sat on the shelf and got old.

It's a gamble, because if you have sick birds, you don't usually have time to order supplies, but I don't know enough about diagnosing to know what I am treating, so I never know what product to use. I don't believe in using an antibiotic unless I would know what I am treating.

Those prices seem kind of high, perhaps because you are in Canada? Even more reason to not have something just sitting on the shelf getting old.

Sally

Thanks Sally,

I do want to have a couple of different antibiotics on hand for emergency situations. I'll Google the antibiotics on the list, to see which might be more helpfull, more broad spectrum.

I do feed live meal worms and fruit flies, so I'm assuming that it is a good idea to worm them every six months? Once a year?

So with a good diet, Feather fast is not needed (good to know).

I think I'll do some more reading on these products, before I put in my order.

Regarding the prices: Yes, these things are more expensive here, especially now with our dollar going downhill.

Thanks Sally, I really appreciate the thoughts on this stuff.

I looked over your whole list and now I want to order everything. Grrrr. I agree, you want to be prepared, yet you dont want stuff just sitting there not getting used.

Then there is the misdiagnosis. I have probiotics I DIDNT use, when I used antibiotics instead months ago....bird died from that mistake. Its such a huge toss up.

And as tiny as their bodies are, is as small our patience when we are scrambling to fix a problem.

Hahaha, and my finches are supposed to help my anxiety! **chuckle**

Wormer I would get.
Antibiotics probably will expire before you get to use them and you need the right one for what the bird has.
Never used probiotics
All the feather aids are just more of what you are already offering through eggs and veggies.

You are quick to notice a problem so I would think you'd have time to get an order in asap if need be. Though I have no idea how quickly they ship in Canada.

Some vets say that probiotics are wasted on Passerines (finches etc) because their digestion system is different than chickens and mammals.

I would nix the Tertatex and Amoxitex, bought Tertatex and never used it. The Amoxitex is rarely recommended. I would invest in a new product by morningbird called Enrotex.... generic baytril. (is a broad spectrum antibiotic used for the treatment of bacterial infections. It is effective against gram-positive and gram-negative organisms and is especially effective when used to treat respiratory, ear, skin and intestinal infections.)

Vets often recommend and prescribe baytril for sinus infections, repiratory infections and intestinal infections. It is good to have in your emergency med kit.

Baytril is not recommended to use on small chick or nestlings.

Probiotics I use on birds after antibiotics are given, had a hen injure her eye and require baytril, once the meds were done she recieved probiotics to help replentish the good gut flora.

Thanks Cindy,

That's definitely one to look Into.
I don't want to have a whole bunch of stuff that will just be laying around collecting dust, hence this post.

I do however want to have a front line broad spectrum antibiotic on hand, for the time, when you have a bird going down fast, no avian vet available, bird going to die, what do you do kind of a situation.

I would also advise getting along with the Ronex 12% a small package of tri-sulfa http://www.glamgouldians.com/product-tr ... fa.php.php

"Treats E-Coli, Coccidiosis, and Paratyphoid. Great emergency medication to keep on hand. Safe with nesting birds and new babies. A must have emergency antibiotic medication"

One nice thing about the tri-sulfa and ronex is they can safely be mixed together and used on nestlings. We see a lot of people loosing or with sick nestlings since you can't use the baytril (including the genric form on nestlings and young). you can also add ACV to the tri sulfa and ronex mix.

Also a small container of medistatin or nystatin, sick babies or birds that are ill fungals and yeast can also come up internally...good to have on hand.
