Finch maybe sick please help !

Post by StodOne » Sat Jan 30, 2016 8:57 pm

In short here are some of the things I noticed my finch doing I wish for someone preferably a profesional to explain to me if it is alright what is happening and what i need to do in order to help the finch if some of those things are not good .Thanks in advance

The finch is aprox. 10 years old , and no i am not lying :P

1.Sleepiness and fluffiness(althought now at night time he is awake and beeping)
2.Lowering his wing when relaxed, maybe he is just stretching i dont know.
3.Bites the bars of the cage in the morning in angry fashion when singing with the female
4.When stationary he lifted one of his legs up into the feathers making the leg invisible a few time
5.Bringing legs close to each other
6.Noticing at times his breathing is a bit fast , even if nothing happened to frighten him
7.He kinda starts bouncing as he stands on one leg on interval of around 4 seconds aprox , but he jumps like that while being fluffy , looks strange i am not sure if he is just trying to find his comfortable spot or something
8.Noticed at times he starts singing squeaky like not the usual song he sings but something different sounds like he is hissing but not like hisss but miouuu miouu and it has ch ch ch but squeaky , i dont know how to explain it sorry, it actually sounds painfull but i think that it is because he wants to mate or something, maybe?
9.When he relaxes and goes to sleep he leans on one side , but as he is active he is absolutely normal.

he actually doesent seem in pain , he beeps and sings and what not , but only this is worrying me , i will take him to a vet in tomorow.
Here are the pics of him so you can see

**a bit longer story but more detailed then the short one**

I have a male zebra finch he is pretty old around 10 years of age, I wish for someone to clarify me if some things are normal or not and what i need to do if something is wrong..
So recently i've bought a female zebra finch and after a few days of having them close to one another in 2 cages , i decided to join them up, so I did.
the male sometimes when he sings with the female well beeps with the female , he starts biting the bars on the cage and looks like he is doing it out of anger , maybe he is just sharpening his beak , but he does have the cuttlefish bone.
He started being fluffy and sleepy, althought not the whole day long , he is generaly happy , but in the middle of the day he starts sleeping some time , although weirdly he is awake now at night althought he was sleeping a like maybe half an hour ago , i've turned on a dimmed hot light bulb , doesent emmit much light and a little ammount of heat just because i have a feeling he is sick and want to keep it warm for him.
So when he relaxes he lowers one of his wings (I didnt see him lower both wings in the same time), lowers his tail and head.
He lowered his head earlier in the food bowl , i wasnt sure if he was awake or not , or if he was just checking out whats down in the bowl.
I've checked his feces seems brownish or darkyellow mixed with white which i think it is OK considering him eating seeds.
As I mentioned he stands on one leg before falling asleep and kinda hops a bit on the lag as if he was re-balancing.
That should be it of what i have to say, please someone respond and tell me what is normal and what is not and what should i do for some things..
thanks in advance if i forgot something i will add in a comment.

Hi.

You have to realize, that your bird is very old.
As birds get towards the end of their life, you will see certain behaviors which may seem odd.

Fluffing , can mean anything from feeling cold, to not feeling well, to being sick. There is no way to tell from pictures and a written description.

Regarding napping during the day: This is something that one sees often, with very young birds and with old birds.

Standing on one leg, is not unusual, and some birds simply like to rest that way.

Leaning to one side or against something, I would put down to simply being old and tired.

Good luck with your trip to the Vet tomorrow, but I think you have to face the possibility that your boy is just old.

Offering him a warm light and his favorite foods along with a quiet environment, would be my advice until you see your Vet.

Is it possible that he is acting this way because he has skin mites?
I think i saw something wiggling on his feathers...

I've placed him nest to the radiator and put a towel around his cage
He seems happier now during the day , he isnt sleeping but is being a bit fluffy , his wing isnt dropping down and he doesent bring his legs together , he kept bitting the bars of the cage when the female was in the same room , i've moved the female in another room and he stopped biting the bars ... anyhow as soon as i get out of my room he begins singing as if he wants me to be in the room , well that is my perception , i've put a towel around the cage now , there is still sunlight i made room for sunlight to pass so he gets sunlights but he cant see me and im next to him and keeps singing , when i remove the towel from my side he stops singing :P

He started having green and watery droppings , is it possible that it is only because of heat from the radiator ?
In all other aspects he seems better , only poop started being green and watery , i am changing his water like 3 times a day and throwing out droppings from the food cup..
I know that green and watery poop is bad , but i dont know what to do to help with the green droppings

if your bird get too hot it will start to drink more in the attempts to cool down and not dehydrate...that may cause him to pass more urine. I would not set the cage on a radiator but off her a heat lamp at one end of the cage for him to go to if needed and move away from the heat source when he does not warmth.

If he is passing droppings in his water cup and drinking it he may have a parasite/protozoa and you can ask the vet to run a fecal/dropping test/smear to rule it out.
