Never mind the eye thing, she just moves her eye more often. It's just so weird how they move independently... I switched the Gouldian and Society Cages, now the Guldians live temporarily in the Society Cage (Now a hospital cage) and the Societies live in a temporary decently sized cage while I scrounge up some lumber and more mesh. I'll also buy Anti-Biotics, Medication for treating Protozoan Infections, Heavy Duty Cleaning Gloves and maybe Sevin Powder to help obliterate the lice population...

Magnificent BirdMan

OMG, Sevin powder? Really? I haven't even used that in my GARDEN for decades! Is there no other solution that's less toxic?

Turn towards home, and go there. Many overs, over woods and fields, streams and hills, many overs. Just turn towards home. How else would one go there? Perhaps it was a dream, and you have awakened from it. May the earth rise up beneath you, with home in your heart, and your person waiting.

I actually don't know the name, but it's similar to Sevin Powder in use. But it has sulfur... (I do know a brand of ectoparasiticide that doesn't contain sulfur, but it's pretty strong as well. Somehow the chickens survive all this toxic dust...) Unlike Sevin Powder, now it seems very un-safe thinking clearly about it. I could just give them daily water baths and clean the cage daily, it won't eliminate them, but it's better than risking the death of my birds. I need to think things through. I might as well change the nest box as well (throwing it away), since it's caked in urine and lice. It's also starting to stink. Is sevin powder THAT toxic? I don't really see it for sale unless it's prescribed by a vet or if you look hard enough, but I do see similar products. Plus my dad really needs to stop throwing termiticide in certain areas of the house and lighting Mosquito Coils because those things are toxic as heck.

What was suggested to use by our avian vet is either the ivermectin 1% or scatt (moxidectin) topically for a total of 3 doses (each dose is one drop to the back of the neck on the skin) repeat after 14 days then again 14 days after the third dose.

Scaly mite is stubborn since they burrow under the skin which leaves the skin open to staph and bacteria.

If you can get a product called Hibiclens 4% (chlorhexidine) you can dilute it 1 tablespoon to 1 gallon of water... wash the feet and legs in this for several days it should knock any bacteria or staph back. You likely need to have a broad spectrum antibiotic given also.

You also need to treat any bird that is in with this bird. We often see with scaly mites that effect the beak there is a loss of feathers around the head the mites can get into nares and cause sinus irritation and sinus swelling...you can actually see what looks like swelling above eyes under eyes and around the beak. If feather loss around the face you can also wash the head and face with the solution using a qtip or cotton pad, careful not to get the solution in the nares/nostrils.

All materials a bird with bacteria and or staph stand on needs to be kept clean especially if any open wounds. Bumble foot typically has a fungal staph or bacteria involved.

Sevin dust (actually not recommended to use at all by avian vets, toxic and should not be inhaled) will do nothing for scaly mite, it lives under the skin and lives off the blood of the host.

The mosquito coils should not be used around bird either, I do understand right now your area has issues with Zika and the reason for their use.

I put a drop of Invermectin on my Jewel and (Un)Lucky 2 days ago. I will apply it again after 15 days (13 left) because they didn't completetly die off. I still don't remember the name of the composition of the powder I bought once in a feed store to eliminate lice... It isn't for the Knemidocoptes mites though, it's for killing lice and red blood mites. But it seems to be a horrible idea since it has sulfur. You're just supposed put a very thin layer of it on the birds feathers, nest-box/cup-nest or infested areas of the cage. It is used a lot on chickens though. I might think about using it on the Japanese Bantam that has some feather lice. It is a very thin coat, just mentioning it again. I might get 30 bucks next week as allowance, so I'll buy some anti-biotics and wood and mesh. I'm not going to use the powder since it might kill my birds or me or anyone that inhales it.

I wasn't sure if I should put this here, but it's all I could think (@Sally if you think this should be moved to it's own, by all means) Can anyone who posted in this about the Leg mites & Scaly face, and also bumble foot post pictures of all of the above? Not like the CRAZY internet ones you see that have obviously gone untreated/unnoticed for weeks.. Anyone have a picture from when it started? I just feel like my new goulds foot looks... not completely right.... and wanted to see what these things looked like. Thanks anyone, Magnificent Birdman I'm so sorry you are going through this, I hope you can afford to get these medicines and save your flock... and your kitties!! Good luck. I'll be [-o< for you and the animals!

Directions for Ivermectin is to apply a drop to the skin of the neck each day for five day. Repeat for three weeks in a row.

The directions from our avian vets is 1 drop of ivermectin 1% (ivomec injectable) for 3 doses each dose 14 days apart.

Iverlux is as Debbie said above.

the ivomec ivermectin 1% is shown below...

Scaly leg....by the way birds can have scaly mites for 6 months to a year before they even show signs of it..best to treat preventatively before bringing any new bird into your established flock.

Tassel foot is the same as scaly mites but the scaling looks like extra toes growing off the bird...the "scaling" is like glue.

Since this scaling is like glue using oils and petroleum (frowned upon by vets since if ingested it can cause internal GI issues) will do no good according to my avian vet....your best defense is topical scatt or topical ivermectin or oral (in water) the meds need to go through the blood stream to get to the mites since they drink the blood.

lnlovesorange The kittens died when I went to pick them up and the mother ran away somewhere. The mother wasn't feeding them so I WAS going to pick the kittens up and treat their mange, but they're dead so I can't really do that.

Good news. Knemidocoptes mite treatment is going well, I still need to treat them though.

The scaly lesions on his tarsals are falling off, but now I see yellow warts on his toes more clearly. And the bumblefoot infection took care of itself or it was never bumblefoot at all. I will continue treatment for 4 more weeks.

Socities are doing well as always, but there are so many juveniles. It's not really a problem though, unless the food runs out. Which happens occassionally.
