Ways not to encourage egg laying zebra finch

Post by yoshi » Sun May 08, 2016 2:29 pm

I just got a new female for my male zebra finch and she has laid like 8 eggs already, I removed them and added 4 fake ones and she is now sitting on them at the bottom of the cage. I have one of those cages with the metal bars on the bottom and the cleaning try underneath. I placed a mat like in the photo Image over the bars so I could clean it easier and place fruits etc on it, the female is sitting on this while sitting on the eggs.

How long will she sit on them? Will letting her sit on them help stop the egg laying.

Should I remove that mat, does it encourage egg laying? Are there any vegetables, greens or other types of foods I should not feed them because they may encourage egg laying?

I have been adding calcium Plus liquid calcium formula by morning bird to their water.

Zebras don't need much help to breed. M+F=eggs.
In my case I had to separate the M and F to STOP them from breeding. The hen would lay eggs any place she could. Separation was the ONLY thing that finally stopped the hen from laying eggs.

The female should have an on and off system when egg laying. She shouldnt be laying too many constantly. Theres no real way to stop them from breedinf once they're together.
