So I got in my room and turned on the lights for a second and the female canary started jerking her lower part of the body in a back and forth motion , it looked like she tried to poop really hard , after a few second the male started doing a similar thing with his tail and lower part of the body but not as hard , is it some kind of breeding behavior or is something wrong with her?
This happened at night time , she has plenty of food and water available in open bowls .

Re: Canary jerking lower part of the body
I am suspecting she might be egg bound , the feathers around her vent are wet , I doubt that she was getting in the water as I've put a blanket over her cage , her vent area is also opening and closing repeatedly I have put oil around her vent area and it was kind of bulged out , suggesting that she is ready to mate , but I am afraid that she tried to lay an egg and got egg bound .
I am not sure though because I haven't seen that symptoms on any site .
Her leg stance is not wide , it is actually pretty narrow she even chirped a bit during the day.
Also she is puffed up , but as puffed up as all the other gloster canaries that I've seen on pictures.
Any suggestions as to what I should do would be appreciated , I will post a video very soon to the weird jerking behavior.

Here is the video ..
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ct31_wZ ... e=youtu.be
I have seen right now on wikihow , that when females are ready to breed their vent area looks swollen and red , that is what my female has , and also the females may raise their tails and appear to squat , now I am not sure if you can count this as squatting , maybe I am just being too paranoid , if anyone is good at canaries please help out .

I only have one canary and have not breed canaries so I'm probably not much help. But I did have an eggbound bird that did not make it. Her behavior was not at all like what your video is showing. She would stay on the floor of the cage and her wings were drooping down and she looked a lot weaker than your hen. She would not perch on anything in the cage, only sat or walked around the floor of the cage. I gave her a few drops of liquid calcium to her beak and she eventually passed the egg but died the next day.
Hope your hen is not eggbound. She may only be ready to breed. Maybe someone will chime in that raise canaries. Keep us posted!

Re: Canary jerking lower part of the body
Jen Thanks for your response .
She hasn't passed the egg yet so I doubt she is egg bound and she doesent look weaker or anything , if she was egg bound she would have either died or passed the egg , she seems to be in normal condition , I've put the two canaries together and they "kissed" and made that little sound they make when they do so , so I am not extremely worried.
And she surely is ready to breed , as the breeder I got it from showed me her vent area , it was swollen , suggesting that she is ready to mate .

Re: Canary jerking lower part of the body
Now that I plan to breed them , I am having difficulties with the nest , they somehow took the whole nest down , I don't know how but it does look it is barely holding onto the wire , any suggestion on how to place the nest so that it doesent fall off?
It is a classic open type nest .
