Lame feet issues

Post by Minxy » Mon Sep 05, 2016 1:27 pm

Hi there!

We've having an issue with one of our babies, he's been out the nest now for a few days but we noticed he wasn't really picking up on how to fly. We shrugged it off, as we've had some that have been slow to learn but he really wasn't picking it up. So after two days of him being out we popped him back in the nest, we thought maybe he wasn't quite done yet!

The next morning he's back out again, not really getting more than a centimetre of the floor. So I watch him for an hour and notice that he's not really standing on his feet. I pop him out the cage and get him on a flatter surface and I can see he's not standing on his feet, rather just on his legs like he's sitting and just springing himself up. I've also noticed that he's not grasping with his feet either, not if we stroke our fingers over them or if we try and balance him on a perch. We have some bendy rope perches, we thought that might be a bit easier for him to grab, but that hasn't made a difference either.

Other than that he seems really happy and perky. Mom and dad are still feeding him, he's attempting to pick to feed himself a bit (we've popped a bit of egg food low down for him just in case he fancies a bit.

Any ideas of what we can do to help him? Or will it be a vets jobby?

Minxy

There may be a chance of hip or leg injury when he jumped out of the nest, as his feet aren't reacting to touch at all.

Like Barbara said, let the parents keep feeding him. Lay paper or a puppy pad on the floor if he is on the grate, and observe him for a few days until you can get an idea of what's wrong.

If you are able to take him to a vet, that is a good idea, as soon as you can.

Hiya, thanks for the reply, as of yesterday he seems to be using them a little bit. He managed to get onto the rope perch and keep himself there, so he's making progress! However, he has an appointment at the vets now anyway for Friday morning. Hopefully he might be even stronger by then!
