Elderly finches only partner has died

Post by mercy4free » Fri Sep 23, 2016 2:58 pm

I just now found out one of my two elderly zebra finches has passed. They are nine years old...well past their normal 5-7 year life (I think that's what I read). I'm not sure what to do about the other one (they are sisters). I know they are communal birds and need others, but I don't know how well she would integrate if someone took her.

Thoughts?

So very sorry, it is difficult to loose ones that have been with you for so long.

You can try another bird in with her but first set a second cage with the new bird next to her cage for a few weeks to see if they interact, interested in each other. (after the new bird is quarantined)

You can rearrange the cage she is in and add a new bird, it will take away any pre-established territories she has.

So sorry you lost one of your pets. It is hard to get a replacement for an older bird. Perhaps you could contact a breeder in your area. Sometimes breeders have old birds that they are willing to give away to a good home. If you put your general location in your profile, it will make it easier for members to help you.

Welcome to the forum, though it is under sad circumstances. There's lots of good reading at www.finchinfo.com, where you will find many articles, especially on how to introduce new birds.

The thing i didn't mention is I'm not looking to get another bird. I may try the mirror. What about like mounting a small stuffed animal at the end of perch for something to cuddle to. Maybe mirror in front of it?

mercy4free I don't blame you I wouldn't get another bird either you would probablly be going thru this again, maybe a small mirror with a bell maybe the ring of the bell would soothe him or maybe one that hangs with rope that he could groom.I would try different things.good luck I hope something works for you
