Gouldian juvie laid an egg

Post by Babs _Owner » Mon Nov 13, 2017 9:13 pm

I've never had this happen before. I have a 5 1/2 ft flight with 5 juvies. 3 recently hatched and weaned and two from January-February that had not colored up.

She is a blueback with little more than one purple feather coming in on her chest and a scarce few blue feathers coming in here and there, but for the most part........she looks like any juvie. As do all the others in the flight. She had to have been inseminated by a juvenile male (or at least the serious attempt was made).

I've never encountered this before from gouldians so young.

I've throw in some crush eggs shelled which they all devoured and added VitD and calicium to her water. This makes me nervous having her popping out an egg and not being developed yet.

So gouldians can reach procreative maturity before the first adult molt? :-\

She laid it in the seed trough .....and yep, she's sitting on it occasionally.

Oh my goodness, they are starting young aren't they?

I haven't had that happen either  .
I'd be adding Calcium to her water (just to be on the safe side), and keeping a close eye on proceedings :-L .

Have you seen any of the youngsters dancing or displaying in this flight?

One have one male about her age, unmolted, different clutch. The other 3 were just weaned last week. It has to be the male about her age.

I just cant imagine 2 of newly weaned (male pastels) getting frisky that early.

I tossed it and gave her a fake, so she lays the rest in a comfortable spot.

I've hooked her up with the vitD and Calcium. I'm super nervous about egg binding with this gal. I also put a ceramic heat lamp on one side of the flight.

She is one of the handful I hand raised last season. Like handraised Bubbles (Jet's gal) she may make a good hen, with her already having the urge to sit. But for pete's sake she has to get her big girl clothes on first!

You need to have the talk with these kids younger and younger, sigh  .

I would definitely consider the young fellow closest to her age as the most likely suspect.

Weanlings, are just way too young to show any interest.

When was this baby egg laid?
