Aggressive Male

Post by Jess » Mon Apr 30, 2018 10:51 pm

I currently have only a pair of zebra finches. After a long time, they've finally had a successful brood. The babies are still nestlings, they've just hatched a little while back (few days). I've noticed that the female would get chased by the male every 30 minutes to an hour or so. I've read all the articles I could, and it have led me to no where. Some possible cause of conflicts I've read could be the male is territorial or the female is overprotective of her eggs. Or that the cage is too small. It has gotten to the point of that my girl will fly into the nest as a sanctuary of safety. I bought a larger cage and I am not sure how much that would help. By the way, this is the first time the male has been so aggressive to the female which leads me to believe it is probably not because the pair is not bonded very well. He has never been aggressive to her before. Any information you could give me would be much appreciated.

Also, I'm thinking of separating the pair if the fighting continues. Will this be bad for the babies if only the mother cares for it?

Jess I think the males stressed and abit confused by the chicks if it’s his first time and taking it out on the female I would put the Male into that larger cage you just bought and leave the female to raise the chicks in the current cage afterwards you can try allowing them back together

And yes the mother can do fine by herself
(How bigs the cluch ?)

I haven't gotten a good look at the clutch, but last time which was 4 days ago I'd say four.

Yep that seems the wisest thing to do (separating the father) otherwise if you had bengalese you could foster the babies.
