Sick Gouldian Finches.. help!

Post by Jak » Tue Dec 18, 2018 5:29 am

I have 6 Gouldian Finches that are concerning me.

4 are I have had for five years and have been healthy, and 2 new birds.

( I believe the new 2 gave my older ones some disease even though I isolated them for one month prior to adding them to the aviary).

I think they have air sac mites.

My old hen came down with it first. I treated her with Ivermentcin spot on for birds by putting it on her skin several weeks ago with one dose. It's 0.35 percent, formulated for birds.

She got better but not 100 percent normal. I treated her again a second time this week, and within 24 hours she suddenly looked in perfect healthy again, actinve and sleek, happy bird.

But then t I noticed one of my old males was fluffed up, breathing heavy and sneezing! So I caught up the birds and listened to them breathing. They all had crackly breathing... so I think they all have air sac mites.

I terated all of them with the ivermectin 5 days ago.

As of today 3 of the 6 birds seem to have recovered fully.

The other 3 birds are in a bad way.....

Bird 1.... my remaining old male, he is fluffed up, still coughing, heavy tail bobbing and inactive.
Bird 2..... New female, inactive and fluffed up but breathing normally.
Bird 3.... New female, she is seriouly ill, very fluffed up, very heavy breahting, and constantly at the feeder and very thin, 'going light'.

So now what do I do PLEASE?

I want to treat again with the Ivermectin spot on, but NOWHERE on the bottle does it say how long the chemical stays in the birds body. I don't want to overdose them by retreating them too soon!!!

Hours of serch on the net has so much conflicing advise, and pages of people debating using different treatment etc.

I found one site says treat with the spot on on day 1, 5 and 9.
Then another site said once a week for a month.
Yet another says day one and then 21 days later!!!!

The poor birds are in the small hospital cage and I want to get them back in the aviry, but I am really worried they will infect my small tropical softbill birds with the mites if I dont't get them 100 percent better first.

Anyone know how often I can put the bird ivermecting spot on them, and how long till they will feel better? I feel so sorry for them in the small hospital cage!

Thank you for any help. (please no one say about different chemicals to treat them... as I just want to use the ivermectin only).

Guess no one could help them.....

I decided to re apply the spot on day 5. Will do the next dose day 9.

3 are looking really good now, but the other 3 still sick with bad breathing.

Hello, for air sac mite, I always do one day a week (S76), usually the day I clean the cage. Then I do spot on treatment every 21 days. That’s always kept them well where air sac mites are concerned. Plus AIL on their cage.

But if they’re snnezing as well, I’d say it’s a respiratory infection. Could be caused by bacteria, viral or fungal. So I would treat systematically for those. I have a poorly Gouldian too at the moment. He’s not responded to Baytril or Ronivet so about to try Medistatin on his seeds for a fungal infection.

The other thing that has always helped in the past and which I’m trying agiain from today is Guardian Angel (Birdcare Company) in the water. It’s all natural so no side effects.
