yes, both males and lived together for about 2 years. I am really puzzled about the whole thing. I did go buy another male when the last one died. These guys get along great, as did the other one but it all is just strange to me. This guy did start out with a small bloody quill and it blossomed into this mess. I know he is in pain because he just sits with his eyes closed and puffy...poor buddy.

I will put the lamp on him when I get home and move his cage away from the lanai screen and try to wipe some of the blood off.

So what about the ointment?

I edited my last post, as I had forgotten to say about the ointment. I use that type of ointment when I am applying closed bands to fledglings, to help the band slide on. I know the fledglings pick at the bands at first, so surely they get some of that ointment in their mouths, but I've never had a problem with it.

Thanks Sally - I never would have found them. It's possible he broke a blood feather. I'm sure he'll look much better once he's cleaned up.

blood feather

Yes, that is what I was thinking, blood feather. I typed quill but that is what I meant.

Thank you!

If it is a broken blood feather then it must be removed.

I have no experience with that - someone else will have to tell you how or you can Google it.

Good luck!

Remove Broken Blood Feather

Post by Malzmom » Fri Apr 10, 2009 8:26 am

OK, I cleaned all the blood off and looked under the wing, he is raw all the way to the skin on his side. I put neosporin on it and antibiotics in his water. Two days now and he is doing better, moving around and really likes the heat lamp for short periods of time. He has a little cubbie he can go in to get away from the light.

Question, seems and though the feather have blood in them, the hard parts so how do I determine which one if any should be removed and then how to do it....

Thanks for your help!!!
