heat for birds

Post by ac12 » Fri Nov 06, 2009 3:16 pm

I saw one of my gouldians kinda puffed up, so I put a 40w bulb into a clamp reflector lamp. Both birds, the puffed up one and the one that was not puffed up, went under the lamp and "sunned" themselves. It is interesting how they bend the head over to warm the side of their head and necks.

I used the 40w bulb cuz the 50w IR lamp was in use on the hospital cage where I have a zebra that was sleeping during the day a lot and a bit puffy.

Too cute!

When the sun is shining through the windows of my aviary, my birds will go to the window sill and sit. Sometimes I have to shoo them away if it is really hot because I can see them open mouth breathing from the heat but they still won't move. Crazy birds!

Heat and sun is relished by finches. In the outdoor aviaries they will get to the bottom and spread their wings straight out...as to soak up as much of that sunshine as possible. They will cock their necks just like yours in the picture and get the most relaxed expression.
Kind of like me stretched out in the chase lounge on the sun deck :D
It does feel good

hmmm if they "like" the heat, rather than need it, maybe I should setup a lamp to keep on the cage.
