HELP really sick Red Headed Parrot Finch!!!

Post by isabird » Sat Dec 12, 2009 6:38 pm

I found one of my red headed parrot finches on the ground of the aviary today in the death position (legs out to his/her side. I thought it was dead. When I went in to get it I realized it was still breathing. But looked like it was dying. I have placed him in a small covered cage with a heat light and heating pad in my bedroom. I have placed egg food, seed, and a shallow dish of water on the ground. He/she is still lying on her side.
Should I try crop feed it to give him/her strength? What can I do to help him/her to increase its chance of survival?
[-o< Please advise, I'm very worry and don't want to loose her...

I've no idea what could be wrong with it but it sounds like you've got everything as it should be now. Is it possible she flew into the side of the cage/aviary too hard and knocked the wind out of herself? I hope that's all it is.

Perhaps vitamins or even better Vitalize in the water may help too. Good luck and keep us posted!

Is it a hen or a cock? Could it be eggbound?

I would give lots of extra heat, keep it warm and give it some NV if you have it. If not, poohbear says glucose water will work. Gatorade perhaps???

Gosh.... I am so sorry. Please keep us updated.

How old is the finch? Still weaning? If its young, yes, feed it.
If its an adult, I think you are doing everything you can. I would consider a drop of liq. bird vitamins or vitalize just as Liz had suggested directly into her mouth/beak. Keep on the heat and make sure you have some humidity... wet towel is good.

Have you considered egg bound? If so, wipe some oil or butter or something on her "butt" and put a drop of liquid calcium into her mouth.

GL, keep us posted.

An obscene number of chicks and eggs
And an incredibly rare St. Goldena Breast finch
Anyone want some finches???

Try Vitalize or Pedialyte, that may work also. Hope it recovers.

Hi All,
Thanks for the suggestions. What is NV? Also, do were to I put the damp towel over part of the bottom? 1/4 of the bottom of the cage maybe? She is unable to perch.

I gave her some pedialite with liquid calcium in it from and eye dropper she seemed to like it. She was a little squirmy which gave me some hope. I also wiped her behind with a wet cloth just in case she was needing it and put a little butter just in case she is egg-bound. I do not know if she is male for female she/he is about 7 months old. I did also give her a little hand feeding formula just in hopes that it would give her energy. I don't know though she doesn't look like she is going to make it. She is very weak and not really moving. Like I said when I saw her in the aviary I thought she was already dead.

I will keep you posted.

Thanka again,
Natalie

My little bird died last night I'm so sad. I treated it like egg binding which is what I think it was. The biggest problem was that by the time I noticed it she was already in horrible shape and very weak. I'm glad she is no-longer suffering but I'm sad that she is gone. I'm also sad for her mate. Is it okay to just keep one?

Thanks for all your help and concern

I am so sorry for your loss. Don't you keep your birds together in an aviary? If so, I think it would be fine as long as it has other birds for company. Maybe you can get it a mate later. Again.... so sorry. :(

I am sorry for your loss. The parrot alone will be fine with the company of others...however they have been known to crossbreed with gouldians...especially without a mate of their own species. :(

If you do get another hen, try and get an older one. Sometimes hens under 1 year are not mature enough to breed, leading to possible eggbinding. (if indeed that was whay went wrong)

Certainly an unfortunate situation. Again, I am so sorry for your loss.
