trimming beak?
I have a zebra whose upper beak is about 1mm longer than his lower beak. All my other zebras seem to have matching length upper and lower beaks. At what point should I be concerned and need to trim his upper beak? He seems to be able to eat just fine. Although I don't know how that longer upper beak affects him when he preans.

I don't trim until it's about 1/8" overgrown or really crooked as they usually can trim it themselves on their various perches.

I agree with Liz. I have had birds that even had growths coming off the side of their beaks that would rub their beaks on the concrete perches and trim their own beaks.

Hmmm
All I have in there are wood perches, none of the sand/concrete perches.

Run out and pick up a concrete perch. I like the pedi-perch. I get mine in extra small size. They run about 2-5 USD depending on who you get them from. I have at least one in every single cage and flight I own.

I picked up a little trick from some of the real finch experts in here to put the perch just in front of their water bowl/dish. Usually after drinking, they swipe their beak a few times to remove the excess water. So if its a concrete or gravel/shell perch they do this on, they get a little grinding action as well. I dont have any problems with any of my birds in their beaks and only one pair (my gold breasts) do I have to trim their feet nails.

Yes - that's exactly the perch I have in every cage and flight here! And I too have every one positioned beside the water dishes.

Yup, with nail clippers. But make sure not to clip into the portion of it that has pink on the inside as that is their flesh. And unless its really overgrown, they dont need to be trimmed.Total Finch wrote:You can trim the beak!?!?!

I'd be afraid to use clippers on a beak.Finch Fry wrote:Yup, with nail clippers. But make sure not to clip into the portion of it that has pink on the inside as that is their flesh. And unless its really overgrown, they dont need to be trimmed.Total Finch wrote:You can trim the beak!?!?!
