Sleeping

Post by bfterrizzi » Mon Jan 18, 2010 8:24 pm

I am concerned at the amount of sleeping that my possible female does. Today she has spent nearly the entire day sleeping. She is a juvenile and I wonder if that is the reason. The male jumps all over her and she hardly budges. She has been eating and drinking so that is a good sign i suppose.

I would say that if it is sleeping all day the bird is sick.

What kind of finch is it?

A Society Finch. I just purchased them on Saturday.
This particular one had gotten out when I put them in the cage and she spent a lot of time and energy flying around the house evading my attempts at catching her. She was very tired but yesterday seemed to be active and flying around. Today though has been sleeping or sitting still all day.

I don't think she should be sleeping a lot ,I would give her some extra heat in a small hospital cage

This is my first go at having birds and I don't really have the requisite cages to do something like that at the moment... What are the chances that a sick bird is able to get over an illness on its own?

You can just put some kind of a lamp or a clamp on type light at one end of the cage they like to get under a heat source but have it so they can move away when they want it may help.Check this link it may help http://www.finchniche.com/a-sick.php

I am thinking she may have injured herself in her escape. Keep her in a quiet, warm room, maybe away from the other bird. If she is sitting on the bottom of the cage rather than perching, make sure she has food and water on the floor of the cage. Hopefully, her injuries are not life-threatening!!

I put a lamp up and she seems to be lounging under that for now so we'll see. Everyone has been a great help so far. The info associated with this site has also been a great source. Thank ya.

As of today she seems to be doing much better, she's getting around the cage and grooming a lot. Hope she perks up as the other seems to be getting lonely....
