My male finch died of a cloaca prolapse?

Post by Brette » Mon Jan 25, 2010 5:25 pm

I was sold a star finch that I was told was a male at the pet shop somewhat recently. I haven't had it for very long (2 months) and yesterday it died of a cloaca prolapse? I didn't think males got this. When I went online, the pictures of a cloaca prolapse matched what I saw. I have 2 questions:

1. Can males get this?

2. I feed my birds egg shells every week and they have access to a cuttle bone all the time. Is this not enough to prevent this problem in females?

:-(

Even with a good supply of calcium, birds need vitamin D3 to be able to absorb the calcium into their bodies. Most of the vitamin supplements available today have D3 added, cod liver oil is another source.

Thanks guys.

I'm upset about this and concerned about my other birds. I thought i was giving them adequate amounts of vitamin and calcium supplements but obviously that's not the case.

Don't blame yourself, Brette, you only had the bird for 2 months, and coming from a pet shop, there probably was no history on the bird. So you have no idea what kind of nutrition and care it had before you got it. This bird could have been in trouble before you even acquired it. If you are supplying calcium and D3, I wouldn't worry about the other birds. This was a pretty rare occurence.

We had a female zebra finch die of the same thing last weekend.
We have had her and her mate for over a year. She was a prolific egg layer however we always took the eggs out as we did not want more babies (they are in a huge aviary with no nesting materials but that didnt stop her from laying).
They are free fed eggshells, cuttlebone, oyster shell with the addition once a week of liquid calcium. Their seed also has added vitamins.
I think its just one of those things.
She didnt show any signs of illness that I noticed beforehand...however Im keeping a close eye on our other females (societies/gouldians).
