Society is not feeling well, symptoms as follows

Post by jimlas43 » Mon Feb 01, 2010 11:10 am

Hi There,
I have a male Society that is all ruffled up and shiverine. he has lost feathers on lower part of his back as well. He is coming down to eat but then retreats to sitting all fluffed up again. He just went through a S76 treatment so I know it is not air sac mites. I just started him on Amitox ( sorry about spelling ) to see if this will help.
I was wondering if anybody experienced the same thing and knew maybe the cause??
Thanks so much!

Could someone be plucking him? He definitely needs a heat lamp and isolation from the other birds. I'm not sure I would be giving Amoxitex unless I knew what was going on with him. Antibiotics can cause problems if they aren't needed.

#1 - Remove him to a small "hospital" cage, so you can treat HIM w/o dealing w the other birds. That also removes him from whoever might have been plucking him.

#2 - Put a heat lamp on one side of the cage. If you don't have a heat lamp, a plain 40 or 60 watt incandescent lamp will do. Put the lamp so it heats ONE side of the cage, so when he gets warm enough he can go to the other side of the cage to get less heat.
Because you are using a heat source, make sure he has water so he does not dehydrate.

#3 - Besides his seeds, feed him an egg mix (hardboiled egg mashed up into small bits). The egg will give him protein which will help him grow his feathers. Because egg spoils, remove and replace with new serving after a few hours.

Watch him to see how he does.
You may have to keep him separated for up to several weeks, depending on how he progresses.
