Female Magpie died... while sitting on eggs
What should I do? Will the male take over? I think I have 4 eggs.
I have societies, should I give the eggs to them? they are not sitting on any now, but are in and out of the nest all the time. There are two nest in the society cage, one baby should fledge next week.
Or I have Java's sitting on 2 eggs? would they be able to take over?
So sad, she was fine yesterday...
Thanks,
adrienne
also, if I remove the eggs, I will have to take the nest apart, it is so well put together that the eggs are really hidden in there. Will that freak the male out?

I think I would trust the societies before I would trust the javas with them. But wait to see what he does.

Sorry you lost your hen. All you can do now is wait and see if the male will take over. If not, then you can try to put the eggs under Societies. Also, I'm going to remove the duplicate post under General Questions, so that any reponses will all be in one place.

I think it will. and so the chance that he will take over is not so much. I think you should put the eggs under society, and let the male have a break.lso, if I remove the eggs, I will have to take the nest apart, it is so well put together that the eggs are really hidden in there. Will that freak the male out?
Sorry for your loss.

Re: Female Magpie died... while sitting on eggs
okay... putting eggs in the society nest around noon today.
Problem is... They are not sitting on eggs yet. In and out of that nest building... but no eggs... Will instinct take over? and they sit?
Ugh... This is so frustrating... and should I remove the magpie nest?
So maybe he forgets everything?
I have another cage... Maybe I just set him up in something else...
Thanks for the replies..

Re: Female Magpie died... while sitting on eggs
Sometimes it takes the societies a few days to get into the sitting mode. Other times they start sitting immediately. All depends on the specific bird. All you can do is to put the eggs in their nest and see if they sit.

Re: Female Magpie died... while sitting on eggs
Okay... I moved the eggs to the society nest...
Hope this works, I thought they would foster if they already had babies or eggs of their own already in the nest.
There were 2 eggs... 1 was very round the other pointed at the end. looks like it came from another bird altogether. But they are the only pair in the cage..
Why are they shaped different?
Thanks
Adrienne

Re: Female Magpie died... while sitting on eggs
It's pretty common for eggs to be shaped differently in a clutch. I've found this especially true for the first egg of a clutch, which tends to be oblong. This is only in my personal experience though. But like I said, it's common for eggs to be slightly different in shape in the same clutch.
